8a Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

http://www.cdc.gov/NCCDPHP/DNPA/obesity/childhood/index.htm
Obese children and adolescents are more likely to become obese as adults.3, 4 For example, one study found that approximately 80% of children who were overweight at aged 10–15 years were obese adults at age 25 years.3 Another study found that 25% of obese adults were overweight as children.5 The latter study also found that if overweight begins before 8 years of age, obesity in adulthood is likely to be more severe.

1. Paragraph with ellipsis:
Some may not believe that obesity in children is a serious health problem. They may think as I did that children’s chubbiness, especially toddlers and very young children, make them look healthy. I thought that it is only baby fat and will disappear when they grow up; however, this is not the case. As pointed out in an article at the Centers for Disease Control website, [one study found that appoximately 80% of children who were overweight……]

2. Paraphrase the passage:
Studies have been conducted by the Center for Disease Control showing that if you were overweight as a child, you will probably be overweight as an adult. If you were overweight before you were 8 years old, you may not only be overweight, but obese as an adult. Studies showed 80% of overweight 10 -14 year olds were obese at age 25, and 25% of obese adults were overweight as children.

3. Summarize the passage:
The Center for Disease Control conducted two studies with results showing people who were overweight as children became overweight or obese as adults. One study showed that 80% of overweight 10 -14 years olds were obese at age 25. Another study found that 25% of obese adults were overweight when they were children.

7b Evaluating Sources

Evaluating Sources 7b:

Website – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. http://www.cdc.gov/NCCDPHP/DNPA/obesity/childhood/index.htm
I found that this website is a reliable source of information for health trends in our country.
The article that I found sited health statistics taken from the NHANES survey which is conducted by the government and is a very reliable source. The evidence is appropriate for the points being made.
Included on the page is the last day reviewed, updated Feb. 2009, a disclaimer of non-endorsement from any links on their website, the CDC mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address. The content source is the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity and National Center for Disease Prevention and Promotion.

Book – The Family Guide to Fighting Fat: A Parent’s Guide to Handling Obesity and Eating Issues
The authors are the Texas Children’s Hospital executive staff: CEO, Physician in Chief, doctors specializing in obesity and medical expertise. They are knowledgeable about the topic. 6c Planning Field Research

I plan to do two interviews. I have made an appointment with my first interviewee for next week who is a Professor teaching Community Nutrition at Metro College.
I will be contacting my second interviewee soon. She is also a Community Nutrition professor at Metro but is also employed at the Tri County Health Department of Colorado

List of questions I may ask concerning childhood obesity:
Do you agree that this is an epidemic in our country?
Do you see this problem getting worse before it gets better?
How do you think this trend started?
What do you think is the most important thing to focus on to reduce this problem?

6a using internet search tools

Before this class the only search engine I used was http://www.google.com/. I used it for everything and it usually gave me many results that were relevant to what I was looking for.
Now that I am trying out more search engines I use USDA.com and CDC.com because they have a lot of information regarding trends and laws for this country regarding nutrition. USDA.com offers a browse by subject side bar, search tips, and advanced search option and I can use quotation marks to search by phrase.

I like SurfWax metasearch because I get plenty of relevant results. http://www.surfwax.com/

Excite is also good with results that are relevant. I like the right side column that offers suggestions on what I am looking for even thought there were many results from my search. It gives me more related topics pertaining to my subject to choose from. http://www.excite.com/
